The summer of 2009 turned out to be reat for painting on location (en plein air). I don't have a studio, so that works for me.

This original dugout on the Ingalls Homestead was built into the hillside near the top of a hill and below where they moved an old school building. Take a narrow dirt path down to it.

Harvey Dunn Memorial Society Plein Air Event

The First Annual HARVEY DUNN MEMORIAL SOCIETY PLEIN AIR EVENT was held August 14 – 16, 2009 in De Smet, South Dakota at the Ingalls Homestead located 1 mile SE of De Smet. Artists of all levels of experience were encouraged to participate in the event.

An informal gathering was held Friday evening, August 14th on the porch of the Ingalls Homestead. Artists were welcome to set up and begin painting on Friday, August 14th or Saturday, August 15th. Painting continued all day on Saturday and concluded with an evening wine and cheese reception at the Ingalls Homestead. All artists were welcome to exhibit and sell paintings throughout the event.

A Wet Sale was held on Sunday at the Ingalls Homestead.

The event was open to the public with no admission and free registration for the artists.

EVENT SPONSORED BY: Harvey Dunn Memorial Society, Ingalls Homestead, Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, and the South Dakota Art Museum.

Around the hillside from the dugout and down another narrow dirt path is an original settler's shanty, nestled now and almost hidden in a grove of smaller trees and overlooking a nice view of prairie grass with some farm fields into the distance.

Down the hill from the Homestead visitor center and beyond the house and barn they had just moved an old church on the property. I think it will be worth a closer look next time.
