2009. De Smet, SD. This original dugout on the Ingalls Homestead was built into the hillside near the top of a hill and below where they moved an old school building. Take a narrow dirt path down to it. ______________________________

2009. De Smet, SD. Around the hillside from the dugout and down another narrow dirt path is an original settler's shanty, nestled now and almost hidden in a grove of smaller trees and overlooking a nice view of prairie grass with some farm fields into the distance. ______________________________ And... in 1968 I was a US Army Combat Artist in Vietnam. I have posted a description of the program and some slides, sketches and paintings I did with the program on another web site (see following link).

2009. De Smet, SD. Down the hill from the Homestead visitor center and beyond the house and barn they had just moved an old church on the property. I think it will be worth a closer look next time.
