Having grown up in the eastern region of the States, I had difficulty, once I arrived in South Dakota, comprehending why rural South Dakotans built their houses so close to the road when they had additional ACRES of property for backyards. Then one summer while exploring southwestern South Dakota for sketch material I realized why: it makes it easier, and probably cheaper, to access electrical and telephone utilities that run parallel to the roads. |

This painting on gessoed masonite was inspired by sandstone formations in the South Dakota Badlands. Wind and water have a daily affect on sculpting these formations. |
